KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A congregation of the Lord’s church in Kansas City, KS gathered for worship this past Sunday despite suffering heavy storm damage to their building just a few days earlier.
The Roswell church of Christ met at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park after their meeting house at 2900 Roswell Avenue sustained damage when violent storms swept through the area around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Winds packing 70 to 80 mile-per-hour gusts destroyed the front wall of the church building, leaving the interior unprotected from heavy rains and hail.
Artrell Harris, minister with the congregation, told a local news reporter, “I was not expecting to see the roof torn off there. I was not expecting to see the bricks that have fallen in on our lobby. Not expecting to see … just the destruction and the devastation.”
In a Facebook video address, Harris said the building was wrapped in tarps and secured to prevent further damage, and a long-term plan was being developed to deal with the aftermath.
“We are meeting with the necessary people, we are developing a long-term plan for worship,” Harris said.
